Dolkun Isa is a former student-leader of the pro-democracy demonstrations in East Turkistan in 1988. After having endured persecution at the hands of the Chinese government, Isa fled China in 1994 and sought asylum in Europe, and acquired German citizenship in 2006. Currently, he is the President of the World Uyghur Congress and Vice-President of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO). He has consistently advocated for the rights of the Uyghur people and has raised the issue in the United Nations, the institutions of the European Union and in individual states and other international fora.
