Yaqiu Wang (pronounced Ya-cho) is Research Director for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan at Freedom House, leading the organization’s research on human rights issues within China and on the Chinese government’s global influence. Wang has been frequently quoted by news outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street
Journal and The Guardian, and has appeared on BBC, CNN, NBC and others. She has published articles in Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, The Globe and Mail and elsewhere. Wang has testified a number of times before US Congress, and has served as a guest speaker at numerous universities. Prior to joining Freedom House, Wang was Senior China Researcher at Human Rights Watch, working on issues including internet censorship, freedom of expression, protection of civil society and human rights defenders, and women’s rights in China. Before Human Rights Watch, Wang worked on press freedom issues in China and other Asian countries for the Committee to Protect Journalists. Wang was born and grew up in China, and has a MA degree in International Affairs from George Washington University.
